Abstract Severson (b. 1924) discusses his childhood in Montana and Idaho. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in October 1942 and was shipped to the Pacific Theater with the First Aviation Engineers. An injury put him in the hospital in New Caledonia while the rest of his battalion fought on Guadalcanal. He rejoined his unit in New Zealand and spent time on Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. Among other duties, he worked as a demolition expert, defusing mines. After the Japanese surrender in August 1945, he went to Tientsin, China, for occupation duty. 43 pages.
